We understand that starting occupational therapy brings up many questions for families. Below, we've answered some of the most common questions parents and caregivers ask about our services. Our goal is to make this journey as clear and comfortable as possible for you and your child. If you have a question that isn't addressed here, please don't hesitate to reach out to us directly.
What is Occupational Therapy
How is OT different from
physical therapy?
OT focuses on helping kids participate in daily activities by working on sensory, motor, cognitive, and emotional skills. Physical therapy focuses on gross motor skills and strength.
How will OT help my child?
OT uses play and purposeful activities to make everyday tasks easier and more fun—like tying shoes, focusing in class, or staying calm. It’s all about helping your child feel more at ease in their body and their world.
Starting Therapy
What happens on your first day?
You'll meet your amazing therapist, tour our space, and complete some initial assessments like a parent sensory questionnaire or coordination activities. Then it's time to explore the gym and have some fun! Parents stay involved throughout. Kids typically have a great time and can't wait to come back!
Will I get a written report?
Yes, a written report will be completed within 4-6 weeks of the inital appointment. You will have time to discuss the evaluation and goals with your therapist.
How will I know if therapy is working?
We track goal achievement, observe your child’s skills in daily life, gather feedback from and reassess regularly. We communicate progress with you openly.
Parent Involvement
Do parents participate?
Most often, yes! We encourage parent involvement and provide coaching to help you support your child at home.
Will I learn techniques to use at home?
Absolutely! We share practical activities and strategies tailored to your family’s daily routine.
Will I gain insight on why my child behaves the way they do?
Yes! Understanding the “why?” is one of our most important goals. We help parents make sense of their child’s behavior and responses. Because when you understand what’s driving a behavior, the path forward becomes clearer and everything becomes more manageable.
Communication, Coordination, & Environment
Will my child have the same therapist?
Yes, consistency is important to us. Building a trusting relationship with one therapist helps kids feel safe, open up, and make meaningful progress.
Do you coordinate with schools and other therapists?
Yes, with your permission, we collaborate with teachers and other providers to support your child across all settings.
Can siblings attend sessions?
We recommend siblings stay home so your child can get the most out of their session. But, we understand that this isn’t always possible—just talk to your therapist about your family’s situation and we’ll figure it out together.
What if my child is sick?
Please keep them home and let us know by text or email as soon as possible. We ask for 24 hours when you can, so we can offer the spot to another family.
Therapy Schedule & Duration
How often will my child attend therapy?
Children attend once a week at the same time to establish routine and steady progress. Weekly sessions allow us to build on previous work, maintain momentum and stengthen the therapeutic relationship—all essential for meaningful results.
How long with therapy last?
It varies—every child is different so there’s no one-size-fits-all answer. Some children reach their goals in a few months, while others benefit from long term support. We reassess regularly, and always make decisions about duration together with families.
Can we change appointment times?
Yes! Current families have priority for schedule changes. We keep a running waitlist of families and reach out as soon as something opens up.
